J/70 One-Design Class

Since its introduction in March 2012, the J/70 has quickly established itself worldwide with 900+ boats sailing in 20+ countries in 2015.  So, far over a dozen fleets have developed in the USA and over a dozen countries in Europe have one-design fleets.  In addition, fleets are developing in South America (Chile, Brazil & Argentina) and the Pacific Rim (China and Australia).

The first one-design J/70 event was held in September, 2012 when the New York Yacht Club chose the J/70 to participate in the NYYC Invitational Cup US Qualifying Series held in Newport, Rhode Island.  Twelve boats sailed with twenty-four yacht club teams participating in the event.

Since then, J/70 Midwinters have been held in January in conjunction with Quantum Key West Race Week in Key West, Florida.  The Midwinters have attracted over 50 boats per event, with numerous World, European, National and Regional champion sailors from various class participating. For 2016, the J/70 Midwinters will be held in St Petersburg, FL from February 25 - 28 at St Petersburg YC- register here.

The first J/70 North Americans was held in September 2013 in Annapolis, Maryland with a record 80 boats on the start line.  Since then it has been sailed in Rochester, NY (2014) and San Diego, CA (2015).  For 2016, the NA's will be hosted May 19-22 at Lakewood YC in Seabrook, TX- register here.

The first J/70 European Championship was just held at YC Monaco, sailing on beautiful Hercules Bay off Monte Carlo, Monaco.  The 2016 J/70 Europeans will be sailed in Kiel, Germany from June 21-26 at Kieler YC.

The first J/70 World Championship was held in Newport, RI, hosted by New York YC and SailNewport in September 2014.  The 2015 J/70 Worlds took place in La Rochelle, France, hosted by SR Rochelaise in early July.  The 2016 J/70 Worlds will take place in San Francisco Bay, hosted by St Francis YC- register here.

J/70 News & Activity

Pierini Tops Bacardi J/70 Winter Series I
(Miami, FL)- Biscayne Bay was open again for business as the inaugural three event Bacardi Invitational Winter Series kicked off December 1-2 in Miami, FL. The event is an off-shoot of the perennial Bacardi Invitational Regatta now run in conjunction with the legendary Bacardi Cup every March.Despite light winds allowing only three races on day one and no racing on day two, the J/70 Class was extremely tight in the top five positions, with a different crew winning each race. Day one was as predicted. As it progressed, the breeze lightened, so did...

Davis Island J/70 Winter Series Preview
(Tampa, FL)- Like its counterpart in Monte Carlo, Monaco, the Davis Island YC has been running its winter series since the inception of the International J/70 class.  It has been a popular series from the beginning for J/70 sailors across America; this year at least 50 entries will be participating in one of the three events. One of the most popular elements of the regatta is that all sailors are treated to an on-going “seminar/ training” program every day, held Friday afternoon before the regatta starts.  As an “upside down” club, the coolest...

J/Love @ Väterchen Frost Regatta
(Hamburg, Germany)- It may not rank as the world’s most notable “local” regatta, if there can be such a thing. However, it certainly ranks amongst the most competitive, picturesque regattas held on a lake in the middle of a major city in Europe. That is what the Hamburger Segel-Club was hosting this past weekend for a fleet of fifteen J/70s, nineteen J/24s, and eight J/22s that LOVE sailing on the gorgeous Alster Lake in front of the Hamburg city waterfront. Klaus Brinkbäumer, winner of the J/70 class had this to say about their experience:"Father...

J/70 - World's Fastest Growing One Design, Trailerable Speedster!

Easier to trailer, rig and ramp launch.
The J/70 Speedster (22.75 feet) is J/Boats' first fully ramp-launchable, keelboat - designed to fulfill a growing need for an easy-to-own, high performance one-design that is exciting to sail, stable enough for the entire family, easy to tow behind the family vehicle, to rig in the parking lot, ramp launch and sail.  Plus, J/70 is built to last.

In less than 48 months the J/70 worldwide fleet is over 1,300 boats strong, attracting some of the most talented sailors in the world and helping to spark growth of numerous sailing leagues across Europe. J/70 is replacing tired old keelboat fleets at a number of sailing clubs and helping to reinvigorate membership by attracting younger sailors into the ranks.  There are fleet discussions underway now around the world both for new leagues and for established clubs.  The Sailing World Overall Boat of the Year J/70 has taken the world by storm and future growth for this fantastic boat looks very bright, indeed!  These days it is safe to say  there is some J/70 event happening on almost any given weekend somewhere around the world!

Key J/70 Features.
- Large comfortable cockpit with open transom.
- Deck-stepped lightweight carbon mast for easy rigging & stepping.
- Inexpensive three sail inventory with masthead A-Sail.
- Vertical lifting keel.
- Small cabin for storage and personal privacy.
- Easy to trailer to regattas, ramp launch and store at home for winter.
- Only 1,750 lbs & low road height so most 6 cyl vehicles can easily tow.
- Fits inside most standard garage doors!

More comfortable to sail on deck.
The 11' long cockpit and moderate height boom in the J/70 allow easy crew movement across the cockpit while tacking and jibing. For sitting and hiking comfort, mid-height padded backrests/lifelines run cockpit length, large cockpit floor mounted toe-rails for secure foot bracing and comfortable seat height and ergonomics makes J/70 one of the most comfortable small keelboats to helm.  No need for hiking straps to keep you in the boat. Plus there are strict class limits on how to hike to make the boat less physical to sail.

Easy for the entire family to join in!
With mandatory on-board jib/spinnaker sheet winches, a feather light responsive helm and confidence building stability, you can enjoy sailing with friends and family more often.  Kids or seniors will feel as comfortable and in control steering or trimming sails, whether for daysailing or evening sunset races, the J/70 will be both exciting and forgiving.  When you are ready to take it to the next competitive level, the competition at national events won't disappoint.

On-board privacy, protection, storage & auxiliary power
The small cabin below is a bonus in any small keelboat, and the J/70 cabin is just large enough to provide weather & sun protection, a place to nap and/or for personal privacy... essential to keeping the whole crew happy if spending a day on the water.

The J/70 one-design class rules provide for a 2.5 hp outboard engine (gas or electric). This means one can sail further away from homeport without worrying about paddling home or hailing for a tow. Race Committees can start races on time and finish them later in the day without having to arrange tow boats.

The J/70 International Class Association is recognized by World Sailing with active fleets in 25 countries and over 1,300 boats worldwide.  There are national, continental and world championship regattas, with strict class rules and measurements.

SCL logoJ/70 Sailing Leagues- Europe, Russia and USA
The revolutionary "sailing league" concept was first introduced in Germany by Oliver Schwall in 2013.  It has since taken Europe by storm, with thirteen (13) nations participating in the 2017 circuits. Sixty-one events are scheduled on J/70s, with a projected 1,500+ races for 732 sailing clubs and at least 8,000 sailors!!

Sailing for Life in Better Sailboats

Sailing is the ultimate freedom, the experience of being at one with nature and the sea, powered only by the wind and one's imagination. It's one of the few "life sports" that offers both a relaxing escape as well as an invigorating challenge. You pick your level of comfort and excitement. Sailing is never the same twice - each time on the water with your sailboat is a unique adventure that can enrich friendships, strengthen family ties, and refresh one's own sense of well-being. How many other outdoor activities can be shared with three or more family generations?  It's been said there are two types of sailors in the world - the young and the young-at-heart.

What a Difference a J Makes

Fulfilling those sailing dreams starts with finding a sailboat that fits you - whether you aspire to sail close to home, cruise to distant shores, or take up the challenge of competitive sailing. Performance differences between sailboats are greater than differences between golf clubs, tennis rackets, skis or cars. A well-designed sailboat, like a good sports car, is an extension of its owner. It could take years of sailing other boats to learn the difference that good design and quality make to one's sailing enjoyment. Or, you can save time and take advantage of what we've designed into every "J."
