Why J/80? Just Sail One And See!

The J/80 planes in 15 knots of breeze with 2-3 crew, without anyone having to step on the foredeck to fly the spinnaker. You can be sailing in 3 minutes-- seriously!

Stability, Speed, Handling & Trailerability...

No other sailboat better combines such desirable qualities. Great stability with speed has been an elusive goal in an easily trailered monohull.

Rod Johnstone designed J/80 with the security and reliability of a fixed lead keel of moderate draft having a 48% ballast ratio! That ballast is made even more effective by J/80's low center of gravity.

To encourage ownership and participation in J/80 events by all sailors, J/80 International Class Rules are written to keep the FUN up and the costs down. The Rules, when racing one-design, specify a 3 sail limitation: Dacron mainsail on slides, 100% roller furling Mylar jib and .6 oz asymmetric spinnaker. The crew weight limit is 3 people of any weight, or 745 lbs. if there are 4 or more people aboard.

J/80 is officially recognized by the ISAF as an International One-Design Class with active fleets in the US, France, UK, Sweden and more. Trailering to class events is easy, it fits US and European legal towing widths, and rides high enough on a trailer so as not to obstruct rear-view visibility.

The Fast, Stable & Easy to Sail One-Design

If you would like to expand your sailing horizons with a modern sportboat in open waters outside protected harbors and lakes, there's only one choice: the International J/80 one-design class sailboat. Sailing World magazine rated J/80 as easier to handle, less intimidating, safer and better suited for sailing offshore than other modern sportboats tested.

J80 keywest2005 02Numbers highlight the reason: The 1,440 lb. lead keel with bulb on the J/80 weighs nearly the same as the leading competitor's entire boat. No question, stability is the most important standard when it comes to a forgiving design, family sailing fun and sailing in open waters.  No wonder the J/80 continues to be the fastest growing one-design sportboat class in Europe, it's a joy to sail in winds from 5 to 25+ knots!

Don't you think it's time to join over 1,600 J/80 owners sailing worldwide who are discovering how well the J/80 fits their plans for sailing with family and friends? J/80 is the only sportboat that combines simplicity of operation, confidence building stability and 15+ knot spinnaker rides in an affordable, low maintenance and trailerable package. It even has 4 berths and a 12 foot long cockpit. You can try one out or refine your skills with expert instruction at a J-World Sailing School in Annapolis, San Diego, San Francisco or Puerto Vallarta.

The recent J/80 World Championship held in Newport, RI saw 62 boats from 9 countries participate in one of the most epic regattas ever.   With spectacular sailing conditions all five days, the J/80s proved yet again they can be sailed competitively by a wide variety of sailors ranging in ages from 20s to 60s!  Read more about it here.

Sailing for Life in Better Sailboats

Sailing is the ultimate freedom, the experience of being at one with nature and the sea, powered only by the wind and one's imagination. It's one of the few "life sports" that offers both a relaxing escape as well as an invigorating challenge. You pick your level of comfort and excitement. Sailing is never the same twice - each time on the water with your sailboat is a unique adventure that can enrich friendships, strengthen family ties, and refresh one's own sense of well-being. How many other outdoor activities can be shared with three or more family generations?  It's been said there are two types of sailors in the world - the young and the young-at-heart.

What a Difference a J Makes

Fulfilling those sailing dreams starts with finding a sailboat that fits you - whether you aspire to sail close to home, cruise to distant shores, or take up the challenge of competitive sailing. Performance differences between sailboats are greater than differences between golf clubs, tennis rackets, skis or cars. A well-designed sailboat, like a good sports car, is an extension of its owner. It could take years of sailing other boats to learn the difference that good design and quality make to one's sailing enjoyment. Or, you can save time and take advantage of what we've designed into every "J."
