Describe your sailing background
56 years of Great Lakes and Inland Lakes daysailing, racing and cruising.
What boats did you own prior to the J/32?
110, Shearwater Cat, Sunfish, Butterfly, Flying Scot, Laser, Venture 24, C&C 30,
C&C 35/2.
What compelled you to buy a J/32?
We wanted a more easily handled boat which incorporated advances in design and
construction, but kept strong sail performance.
What is the best feature of the J/32
..second best?
Easy to handle for just the two of us
Sensitive and balanced helm
Comfortable cockpit and efficient deck layout
Low, spacious V-berth
Chute in ATN in anchor well all hooked up (you'll use it 10 times more often compared to
bagged and stowed in a cockpit locker)
Good performance even under main alone
Roomy, uncluttered, rugged hull; bulletproof rig
(Couldn't stop at just two features. incidentally, our nav station works fine, for
more room use the table or the cabin sole. We consider the table hardware to be very
rugged).
Have you added any custom features to your J/32?
Dutchman system for main (once adjusted it's great)
48" Wheel
Lewmar 40 STC winch for main halyard and jib halyard (good for aching backs)
Ship shades for ports for privacy at the marina
Screens for Lewmar hatches (they are fit poorly and are expensive junk), homebuilt screens
for companionway (they are great)
Bag to hold screens and companionway boards saddlebag style over the longitudinal bulkhead
in the starboard seat locker.
Installed cockpit table bag vertically in starboard seat locker for easy access (aft of
access panel to engine)
Dock line and spare line hangers in port seat locker
Autohelm 4000 plus
Awlgripped topsides Flag Blue leaving 3" whit gelcoat stripe above and 2-1/2"
stripe below, but above the boot top (to reduce visual height of topsides). We
masked, Larsen prepped and sprayed.
Describe your most memorable J/32 voyage.
West Shore of Lake Michigan to explore north shore of Green Bay and return, a total of 650
nm.
Please share any addl experiences.
On above cruise, a run from Port Washington to Racine, wind 22K gusting to 26K dead
downwind, short steep 8 footers. SKYLARK handled beautifully, stable and light helm
under full main alone. Minimal tendency to round up or down was amazing compared to
other boats we've known.
What are your future plans with the J/32?
More cruising, Beaver Island group and maybe North channel, possibly double-handed racing.
