2012 J/Sailing Calendar

PHOTOGRAPHERS

The J/Sailing Calendar could not exist without the extraordinary talents and artistry exhibited by this years' contributors of sailing photography.  From all over the world, this group of sailing photographers, many of whom are world renowned, award-winning photo-journalists, have experienced everything you could ever imagine to get "the perfect shot".  Many of these now grace the pages of this year's J/Sailing Calendar.

Shooting great sailboat photos takes extraordinary skill, timing and a bit of luck-- call it serendipity or perseverance, all of them can tell you that getting tossed around in small rubber inflatable boats (RIBS) can often be dangerous.  But, when they get that perfect photograph, they know it. It is through their work that we can enjoy the beauty of sailing as seen by their perspective on what makes a great sailing photo- the composition and interplay of light, contrast, waves, wind, clouds, sky, the landscape and seascape and how the sailboats themselves perform on the sea.

We consider ourselves fortunate to have such broad range of J's sailing off some of the world's most beautiful harbors and sea coasts, some of them have been beautifully captured by these remarkable photographers. Please "meet" this year's J/Sailing Calendar photographers below and enjoy their work.

Tim Wright

Tim was living on his 34 ft sailing boat in the Caribbean and started to photograph yachts as a means of survival. Today he spends winters afloat in the Caribbean. Over recent years he's been active at regattas in the UK and the Mediterranean. Many sailors will instantly recognize his unique style. Where other photographers shoot from larger boats Tim works from a tiny inflatable, this gives him incredible maneuver-ability, allowing him to get close to the action.

Erik Simonson

Erik grew up with matching bed sheets and curtains with pictures of the great clipper ships on them. A son of a son of a sailor, he was genetically disposed to an attraction to things wet and wind driven. In 1978 he was given his 1st sail-boat ride and there was no turning back. A few years later he acquired a Pentax ME Super which he dragged with him on all of his adventures. Numerous bodies and thousands of rolls of film (and digital cards) later, he's finally starting to get the hang of it.
